Skin boosters: it's never too early

Skin boosters are a proven way to maintain youthful skin and turn the clock back on aging. This simple treatment plumps, repairs, brightens, and stimulates new collagen without changing the structure of your face or affecting muscle movement. It’s never too early to start getting skin boosters.

We all hear about the effects of age on our skin — fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, loss of moisture and volume. But did you know the aging process starts in your twenties? Once we hit our mid-twenties, our collagen starts to decline and the signs of aging begin to show on our face, neck, and hands. If you want to maintain plump, even, glowing skin, it’s best to start early.

What are skin boosters?

Skin boosters, as their name suggests, are injectable treatments that “boost” your skin’s moisture and stimulate collagen production. Because the treatment bypasses your skin’s outer barrier, boosters hydrate from within while plumping, smoothing, brightening, and softening fine lines.

Think of skin boosters as topical moisturizer taken to the next level. The effects are deeper, longer-lasting, and more restorative because they work at a cellular level. Skin boosters are a highly-effective way to slow the aging process before it starts, or to repair skin that’s already begun to age.

How do skin boosters work?

Skin boosters are a wonderfully simple treatment. Using a micro needle, injection gun, or cannula, hyaluronic acid and vital nutrients are delivered directly to the dermis, our skin’s middle layer. The deposits of skinboosters act like reservoirs, deeply hydrating and nourishing the skin. The results? Plump, dewy skin, softer lines and wrinkles, decreased scarring, and more.

Skin boosters also stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which are critical for youthful skin. Cells, called fibroblasts, live in our dermis and are responsible for collagen production. As we age, our fibroblasts become inactive and produce less collagen. Hyaluronic acid gives our fibroblasts a wake up call, signalling them to start producing collagen again. With regular, continued use of skinboosters, you can actually turn back the clock —or stop it from starting in the first place.

What's in them?

There are 2 different forms of skin boosters, biorevitalization and mesotherapy. Biorevitalization products, like Restalyne Skinbooster, contain pure hyaluronic acid, which naturally occurs in our bodies. Hyaluronic acid replenishes moisture and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin.

Mesotherapy products like TEYOSAL Redensity contain hyaluronic acid along with a cocktail of vitamins, minerals, plant extracts, and amino acids designed to stimulate your skin.

Biorevitalization products tend to be more viscous than mesotherapy products, so they do a little bit of filling, in addition to renewing the skin. Mesotherapy products are more liquid, so they do not fill.

Neither product contains anything that will change the structure of your face or affect muscle control.

Am I a good candidate for skin boosters?

Everyone is a good candidate. Skin boosters are a both a powerful preventative measure and a fantastic treatment for older skin.

If you’re in your 20’s, skin boosters will maintain moisture levels and ward off the first signs of aging. People who have dry, dull, or tired skin, large pores, acne scars, or fine lines and wrinkles will also benefit greatly.

If you’re trying to decide between mesotherapy and biorevitalization, note that mesotherapy is better suited to younger patients. If you start early enough, Mesotherapy is highly effective at preventing aging. Mesotherapy injections have a cumulative, long-lasting effect. They deliver important nutrients and moisture deep into the skin, but do not fill. Mesotherapy works best  on the early signs of aging.

Biorevitalization is most effective on patients who are 30+ or who have more advanced signs of aging. Biorevitalization solutions are a viscous gel, so they plump and fill, as well as delivering moisture deep into the skin. They also stimulate collagen and elastin production, which is important as we age. The effects of biorevitalization are more noticeable on older skin.

Are skin boosters more effective than topical creams and serums?

Absolutely, yes. Skin boosters bypass the skin barrier, putting hyaluronic acid right and other anti-aging ingredients where its most useful, in the dermis. In the skin’s middle layer, hyaluronic acid can stimulate collagen and elastin, plumping and hydrating your skin from within, not just on the surface. Skin boosters slow signs of aging and increase skin’s moisture levels in a way that’s not possible with topical products.

What areas are typically treated with skin boosters?

We typically treat the face, neck, decollete, and hands because they show age faster than other areas of the body. If you’re considering skin boosters, we recommend treating all 4 areas so they age at the same rate.

How are skin boosters different from botox or fillers?

Botox and fillers are a bit like photoshop. They offer a quick fix (with great results!), but they don’t treat the underlying causes of aging. Botox and fillers are mechanical, lifting, shaping, and filling the skin, or freezing muscles to relax wrinkles. Their particles are also larger and harder than the ones in skin boosters, allowing them to give structure to the face.

Skin boosters, on the other hand, are extremely soft. Instead of working mechanically, they enhance the skin on a biochemical level. Skin boosters slow or reverse the aging process by putting hyaluronic acid deep into the skin. This hydrates the skin from the inside out resulting in plumper, brighter, younger looking skin. Skin boosters also stimulate collagen production, restoring our bodies’ ever-diminishing reserves, and offering long lasting anti-aging effects. They do not change the shape of your face or interfere with muscle control.

Before your treatment:

Before your skin boosters, you’ll meet with us for a free consultation. We’ll get to know you and your medical history, and discuss the areas you wish to have treated.

If this is your first time getting skin boosters, there are a few things to consider:

Are you taking any medications or supplements? Some medications or supplements can thin the blood. The following medications should be stopped a week before your appointment and not be used until 3–5 days following your treatment:

Aspirin, Gingko Biloba, Ginseng, Ibuprofen, Omega-3 fatty acids, St John’s Wort, and Vitamin E.

Do you have implants or permanent fillers? Skin boosters should not be injected into an area where a permanent implant or filler has been placed.

Are you pregnant? Specialists will not inject skin boosters if you are pregnant or nursing. No studies have been done about the effect of skin boosters on pregnant women, so specialists don’t know if they’re safe. Err on the side of caution and put off treatment until after your baby is born.

You should not get skin boosters if you are sensitive to hyaluronic acid or the additional mesotherapy ingredients. Speak to your specialist about the ingredients before treatment.

You should not get skin boosters if you are on antibiotics or have any kind of infection, if you have a bleeding disorder, or any kind of condition that affects your immune system.

You should also avoid “anti-aging” products such as Tretinoin (Retin-A), Retinols, Retinoids, and Glycolic Acid, as well as waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or hair removal cream on the treatment area or 3 days prior.

Taking Arnica for 4 days before treatment can greatly help with post-treatment bruising or swelling.

What can I expect during my skin booster treatment?

Getting skin boosters is quick and easy. The average treatment takes about 15 minutes. It can take longer depending on how many areas you’re having treated. Again, we recommend treating the hands, neck, and face at the same time.

Here’s what you can expect at your appointment:

  1. We’ll review the treatment areas we discussed in our consultation.
  2. Our specialist will clean the treatment areas to prepare them for the skin booster injections.
  3. We’ll offer ice, numbing cream, or local anesthetic if you’re concerned about pain at the injection site.
  4. Using a micro needle, injection gun, or cannula, our specialist will inject skin boosters into the desired treatment area(s).
  5. You’re good to go!

What's the downtime after skin boosters?

There’s a little bit of downtime after getting skin boosters. You will likely experience some redness and minor swelling immediately after your treatment, and you should not use makeup on the treatment areas for at least 12 hours.

Side effects should go away within one to two days. We recommend allowing at least a week to fully recover, so if you have a big event, keep this in mind.

Are there any side effects?

The side effects associated with skin boosters are very mild and usually subside in one to two days. Side effects include: redness, bruising, and swelling. Some people also experience tenderness or itching at the injection site. These side effects usually go away on their own a few days after treatment.

Some people experience lumpiness at the injection site, which is easily fixed by gently massaging the treatment area.

If you experience severe pain, blanching of the skin, or any other serious issues after treatment, contact your doctor (and injector!) immediately.

Are there any special after care instructions?

After your skin booster injections, you should:

  • Avoid alcohol, Aspirin, and Vitamin E for at least 24 hours
  • Avoid other cosmetic treatments like peels, lasers, or waxing for at least 24 hours
  • Avoid vigorous exercise, saunas, or steam rooms for 24 hours
  • Stay out of the sun until any redness and swelling subside
  • Avoid makeup for the first day after treatment. If you absolutely must wear makeup, apply mineral makeup with a clean brush.

Your skin’s natural defenses against the sun are not as strong for a few weeks after treatment. We urge the the daily use of SPF 50 after treatment. Regardless, daily SPF is your best defense against premature aging. We recommend applying a minimum SPF 30 every day.

If you’re uncomfortable after your treatment, you can take Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen, and apply a cold compress — but don’t apply too much pressure! Arnica supplements may help reduce swelling.

What kind of results can I expect?

Skin boosters have been proven to improve skin’s elasticity, firmness, smoothness, and hydration. Because your skin is deeply hydrated, fine lines and wrinkles diminish, your skin looks fuller, and it stays moisturized longer. They’ve even been shown to improve the look of acne scarring. Overall, you can expect to look younger and refreshed.

How soon will I see results?

You will see some results immediately after treatment. Most patients say their skin feels smoother and looks plumper. It can take up to 3 months to get the full effect of skin boosters, but you will gradually notice your moisturizer lasting longer throughout the day, an increasing glow, and diminished pores and fine lines. You can maintain your results with regular treatments.

How many treatments will I need?

To reap the benefits of skin boosters, you’ll need 3 to 6 treatments a year, about 3 months apart. The hyaluronic acid in the boosters breaks down completely over a period of months, leaving no trace of the filler, so continuous treatments are required. Because skinboosters stimulate collagen production, you may need less-frequent treatments over time.

Younger patients who get skin boosters as a preventative measure will need fewer treatments.

How much do skin boosters cost?

The average cost is $300 to $500 depending on the size of the treatment area.

The bottom line.

Skin boosters are a simple, proven, highly effective way to renew or maintain your skin’s health, regardless of your age. With an early start, skin boosters can ward off the signs of aging, or they can restore a once youthful appearance. They’re more powerful than even the best topical product and they’re one of the best preventative treatments out there.
