How do dermal fillers work?
As we age our bodies stop producing collagen and elastin — both of which help maintain our skin’s firmness and fullness. Over time, we deplete our body’s store of collagen and elastin and our skin starts to wrinkle, sag and lose its fullness. At VBeauty Spa, we often find that this common process is a concern to our clients. However, with options on the market such as dermal fillers, there is an easy fix available.
Dermal fillers “fill in” sagging or hollow areas and restore the volume that gets lost with age. The results? A refreshed, more youthful-looking appearance that turns the clock back for our patients. When will I see results?
If you’re visiting an aesthetic medical spa for a transformative experience, it’s understandable that you would want a fast and effective procedure. The results from hyaluronic acid-based fillers are immediate, though it can take anywhere from 7-10 days to see optimal results. After a week or so, the treatment fully settles and swelling/redness subside, so you can see the “full effect” of the process.
Clients should be aware that while they’re long-lasting, the effects of dermal fillers will eventually wear off. Results can last anywhere from 4 months to 3 years depending on the type of filler used. You will need additional treatments if you want to maintain your look, so it’s important to schedule in follow up appointments if you want to refresh your fillers after your initial consultation and procedure.
Before your treatment
Before your dermal fillers, you’ll meet with me for a free consultation. I’ll get to know you and your medical history and discuss the areas you wish to have treated. Because dermal fillers can change the shape of your face, I want a firm understanding of the results you’re looking for. This way we can determine the best course of treatment and tailor the process entirely to your vision and skin type.
Dermal fillers may react with some medications, supplements and skincare products. As a result, we advise avoiding the following for at least a week before your appointment:
Aspirin, Gingko Biloba, Ginseng, Ibuprofen, Omega-3 fatty acids, St John’s Wort and Vitamin E, “anti-aging” products such as Tretinoin (Retin-A), Retinols, Retinoids and Glycolic Acid.
It’s also important that you avoid any treatments during active infections and while on antibiotics.
You should also avoid waxing, bleaching, tweezing or using hair removal cream on the treatment area for 3 days before your appointment. It’s crucial that your skin is in good condition and free from recent irritants in order to ensure that the dermal fillers procedure is easy and seamless for you and produces the best overall results.

During your treatment
The whole procedure, depending on how many areas you’re having treated, takes about 30 minutes. When I inject dermal fillers, I’m “sculpting” your face. I need to inject a little, look at your face and inject a little more. Consider it an art form —if it’s done carefully, it will be a masterpiece. As each client’s face and skin type is different, as well as the results they wish to achieve, I always take my time to tailor my approach to your specific needs and vision throughout the entire process and procedure.
To begin with, we’ll review the treatment areas we discussed in our consultation. I’ll offer ice or numbing cream if you’re concerned about pain at the injection site. After cleaning and marking the treatment area, I’ll use a microneedle or cannula and gradually inject fillers into the treatment area to achieve the desired effect. You can check out the results to make sure they’re what you wanted! Remember that you’ll be a bit swollen, though this should subside gradually after your appointment.

After your treatment
While the procedure is a simple one, there’s a little bit of downtime after getting dermal fillers. Most people experience minor swelling or bruising, which should subside within a few days. We recommend allowing at least a week to fully recover, which is why you should consider booking an appointment during a time when you have a few days to recuperate and enjoy relaxing afterwards.
After your dermal filler treatment, you should also:
- Remain upright for 3–4 hours
- Avoid rubbing or pressing on the affected area for 3–4 hours
- Avoid other cosmetic treatments like peels or lasers for at least 24 hours
- Avoid vigorous exercise or bending for 3-4 hours
- Stay out of the sun until any redness and swelling subside
- Sleep with your head propped up to reduce swelling
If you’re uncomfortable after your treatment, you can take Acetaminophen/Ibuprofen and apply a cold compress — but don’t apply too much pressure. It’s important to be gentle and treat your skin with care during this time period in order to ensure the best results and the easiest recovery process.
Don’t forget your follow-up appointment! Come back 10-14 days after treatment to make sure you look just as you wanted.
