Here is How She Reversed 10 Years of Sun Damage

At VBeauty Medical Spa, we treat a wide range of cosmetic issues: wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, sagging skin, and scarring. But one of the most common skin problems we deal with is sun damage.

This is the result of prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays emitted by the sun. Over time, this can lead to a number of aesthetic changes, including:

  • Sun/age spots
  • Dark patches/hyperpigmentation
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Spider veins
  • Dry skin

Fortunately, various treatments are available to help reduce the visible effects of sun damage and create clearer, healthier-looking skin. After undergoing treatment for a decade’s worth of sun damage, one of our recent clients was amazed at the results: her skin was beautifully rejuvenated and had a much more youthful appearance.

If you want to treat the sun damage you’ve accumulated over the years, you can choose from multiple options. In this post, we’ll look at three treatment types to consider.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are a non-invasive solution for addressing several cosmetic issues, including fine lines, scarring, and (crucially) sun damage.

Performing a chemical peel on the face can create stunning results. They use a combination of carefully selected chemicals to remove the skin’s outer layers, revealing a fresh layer underneath.

Any areas on your face that have been affected by sun damage will appear clearer and more youthful once the peel’s effects are fully visible.

Unlike traditional invasive treatments, chemical peels require no injections or downtime for recovery.

VBeauty Medical Spa offers a selection of chemical peels to suit different client needs and goals. Our lighter peel is ideal for treating mild sun damage, such as sun spots. But our deeper peel is best for sun damage that is more severe and noticeable.

CO2 and Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing

One of the most effective treatments for sun-damaged skin is our CO2 and erbium laser skin resurfacing. CO2 lasers are often used independently to address sun damage and create a clearer complexion, but we complement it with an erbium laser to deliver a more powerful treatment.

How does it work? When a CO2 laser emits a beam of light at the client’s skin, the water in the targeted skin cells absorbs that energy. This heats the water and causes the skin to essentially vaporize. As a result, the outer layer of skin is removed — revealing a fresher, clearer layer underneath.

This is a little similar to a chemical peel, though the treatment method is completely different.

However, while CO2 lasers penetrate skin at a deeper level to address damage below the surface, erbium lasers are gentler. They focus on the top layer of skin instead.

By using CO2 and erbium lasers together in one treatment, we can achieve outstanding, balanced, lasting results. Here are some key details to consider:

  • Fully customizable: We’ll adjust the intensity of the treatment to suit your sun damage and goals.
  • Multiple sessions required: Most clients need three treatments for the best results. We’ll schedule these at regular intervals across several months to give the skin time to heal. However, some clients notice real results after their first session.
  • Effectively treats more than sun damage: CO2 and erbium laser skin resurfacing can also treat sagging skin, scars (surgical and acne), and large pores.
  • Short treatment time: Each session typically lasts around one hour, which includes time to apply the numbing cream. The laser is usually active for approximately 10 – 20 minutes of the session, though this can vary.

Dermamelan

The Dermamelan treatment is an innovative form of depigmentation therapy created to address a range of skin issues. It’s one of the most powerful solutions on the market for achieving a more balanced complexion.

How does it work? Dermamelan inhibits the enzyme responsible for melanin production — tyrosinase — to even out the client’s skin tone. If you have developed hyperpigmentation due to prolonged sun exposure, you may achieve a significant improvement in your skin tone with Dermamelan.

Dermamelan treatments span an in-office session and at-home skin care, allowing you to play a key role in the process.

  • In-office: Our experts will apply the Dermamelan mask to your face carefully, then leave it in place to start taking effect.
  • At-home: We provide you with the skincare products you need to promote depigmentation and clearer skin.

As with all treatments for sun damage, your Dermamelan journey begins with a consultation. This gives you a chance to discuss the process, learn more about how it works, and ask any questions you may have to set your mind at ease.

One of the most amazing aspects of Dermamelan is its versatility — it’s suitable for all skin types. Another fantastic benefit? As it incurs minimal downtime, you can carry on with the rest of your day after undergoing the in-office segment of the treatment.

What Can You Do to Help Reduce Sun Damage?

Each of the three treatments discussed above can address different types of sun damage, but taking care of your skin is crucial to help reduce further issues.

Here are four tips to help you avoid sun damage:

  • Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or above whenever you go outside during daylight hours, even during winter and overcast days. Apply it generously to any areas that will be uncovered.
  • Avoid tanning beds and similar treatments, as these can cause lasting sun damage. If you want darker skin, try a self-tanning product instead.
  • Stay in the shade whenever possible, whether sitting under a tree or using a parasol/umbrella.
  • Cover up well, even on hot days. Wear loose clothing with a tight weave to reduce the amount of UV radiation passing through.
