What is PRF?

PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) is a repairing, rejuvenating treatment that harnesses the super-healing growth factors in your own blood. PRF is rich in white cells and fibrin matrix, which stimulate collagen, and reverse the signs of aging. This rapid new skin cell growth is highly effective in treating fine lines and wrinkles, improving tone and texture, and adding volume to your skin.

PRF is typically used to treat the under-eye area, nasolabial folds, cheeks, smile lines, lips, and chin. It is also used on the scalp to stimulate hair growth and can be used to firm the hands, neck, and décolleté.

For a PRF treatment, your blood is spun at a lower speed so that some of the white blood cells and stem cells remain in the platelet layer. The slow spin also means fewer cells are damaged, which leaves a higher concentration of healing platelets. PRF contains approximately 10 times the platelet concentration found within the body. PRF releases growth factors into your skin for up to a week, providing more robust, longer-lasting results.

The product is completely natural and has an extremely low chance of side effects. To enhance the results of your PRF treatment, combine it with microneedling.

PRF or EZ gel in Toronto is one of the most effective treatments for under-eye dark circles and hollowing. Not only is EZ gel your own natural filler rich in growth factors and stem cells, but it also stimulates collagen in the treated area up to 3 months after the treatment. PRF, or EZ gel, is one of the most popular treatments of Dr. Anil Rajani, who specializes in regenerative medicine. At VBeauty, we use PRF/EZ gel for face, neck, hands, and eye rejuvenation. Typically, three treatments are needed 1-2 months apart.

How does PRF work?

When your body is injured, biological scaffolding called fibrin is formed. The platelets in your blood then bind to this scaffold of fibrin, where they become activated and release growth factors. These growth factors start the wound healing process by creating new skin cells, collagen, elastin, and blood vessels. A PRF injection jump starts new cell growth and collagen production, resulting in firmer, plumper skin, and a reduction in fine lines and dark spots.

When will I see results?

You can expect to see results approximately 2-3 weeks following your treatment, and a larger difference by 4-6 weeks. Your skin will continue to improve over the weeks and months following your treatment. A full PRF treatment requires at least 2 treatments, 6 months apart. Results may differ if you combine PRF with other treatments like microneedling.

Because PRF uses your own body’s regenerative powers, the effects last for as long as you care for your skin. If the results start to fade over time, you can schedule a booster treatment at any time.

Before your treatment

Before your treatment begins, you’ll meet with me for a free consultation. During this appointment, I’ll get to know you and your medical history to determine if PRF is the right option for you. Read about the difference between a PRF and PRP treatments here.

We’ll then discuss the area(s) you wish to have treated and answer any questions you may have. I want you to feel reassured and relaxed during your procedure, so I welcome all queries in advance so that you feel prepared, informed and at ease on the day.

It’s important to stay hydrated in the days leading up to your treatment, as it will boost your plasma levels and make it easier to draw blood. By drinking enough water in advance, you can help your procedure run more smoothly and maximize your chances of gaining the best results possible.

During your treatment

A standalone PRF treatment takes about an hour—longer If you are combining your treatment with another procedure. Firstly, I will draw approximately 10 ml of your blood into a vacuum tube. Your blood is then placed in a centrifuge at a low speed, which separates your blood’s components. I will then remove the platelet-rich layer, which still contains some white blood cells and stem cells.

Once treatment begins, 100% PRF (from your own blood) is injected into the desired treatment area. Ice (or cooling jets) are used to alleviate any discomfort you may have during the procedure. I will offer you a local anesthetic if you’re concerned about pain, but most patients only experience mild discomfort.

After your treatment

There is a small amount of downtime after a PRF treatment. You may experience a swelling or “sunburn” effect for 3-5 days after your PRF treatment, and may have minor swelling for up to 2 weeks. To avoid infection or further irritation of your skin, you should take the following precautions after your treatment:

  • Don’t wash your face for 24 hours after treatment
  • Don’t use products such as retin a or acids for 3 days after treatment
  • No swimming for 48 hours after treatment
  • No exercise or excessive sweating for 48 hours after treatment

If you have any specific aftercare concerns or questions, you can always contact me at the VBeauty Spa and I will address them with you directly. PRF is a proven procedure that brings many great benefits to clients, and I’m delighted to provide it here in Toronto.
